SIM for OS/2

I just compiled and released SIM Instant Messenger version for OS/2.

Update from 05.12.2007 - newer release available!

SIM is powerful plugin-based multiprotocol instant messenger, which includes support for ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber IM protocols and also can post into your LiveJournal journal and communities.

SIM is based on Qt toolkit (ported by dmik).

SIM and it's chat window.

OSD plugin notification at lower-left corner, contact is typing.

Weather plugin displays weather.

SIM IM reviews (in Russian):
Обзор от iXBT
Обзор от itc.ua (SIM в конце)
Обзор jabber-клиентов (в том числе SIM)

Note: This program requires GCC 0.6.1 runtime library.

Perfect port. Thanks! Would it be possible to port also the System tray plugin?

Mar 19, 2007, 12:47:00 PM

2 korry: yes, I think possible. Maybe not very soon, but hope in some next weeks.

Mar 20, 2007, 10:41:00 AM

Thanks a lot for porting this messenger! Works fine. It sometimes crashes when I modify my MSN account, but this may be related with previous Jabber transport activities. I'll monitor this and hope you'll keep on porting further releases. :-)

Mar 20, 2007, 11:02:00 AM

2 Sven: my OS/2-related patches already committed into SIM's main repository, so, I hope, compiling further releases will not a problem.

Mar 22, 2007, 2:35:00 PM

This is very attractive. But it seems not to support DBCS. Do you have a plan to support DBCS ?

Mar 22, 2007, 2:48:00 PM

2 komh: please test, if windows or linux version supports DBCS, to be sure if there no problem with SIM itself. If windoze or linux version work well with DBCS - then mail me, we will determine which part of SIM/2 lacks DBCS support - Qt library or something other and we will see what we can do with this.

Mar 22, 2007, 5:06:00 PM

2 komh: I just talked with dmik (who ported Qt) and he told DBCS unsupported in Qt/2.

See: http://svn.netlabs.org/qt3/ticket/28

And discussion here: http://svn.netlabs.org/qt3/ticket/25

So, there no chance to make DBCS working until Qt/2 will be improved.

Mar 22, 2007, 5:33:00 PM

Thanks for your infos. If so, I would look into Qt/2 expecting better result. ^^

Mar 25, 2007, 1:02:00 PM

I seem to fix DBCS problem both input and output. But partially input. So I want to test your SIM with my patch, however it would not start with mine. How can I make SIM work with mine ?

Mar 25, 2007, 1:28:00 PM

komh, cool!

To work with SIM, Qt must be built with such setup:

Enter a base name for the Qt DLL:

>>> simqt3

Select the Qt library debug level:

1) Release (no debug information)
2) Debug

>>> [12] 1

Enable or disable optional Qt library modules
(pressing Enter will accept the current selection):

1) Network [X]
2) Workspace [ ]
3) Iconview [ ]
4) Table [ ]
5) Canvas [ ]
6) XML [ ]

>>> [123456/Enter]

So, Name: simqt3, Modules: only Network.

If this not helps, mail me and send your Qt patches, I'll build it.

It seems to work. But whenever I play sound file in Setup/Sound, SIM crash. BTW, sound examples works fine. I'm afraid I cannot confirm what the problem is now. Anyway I'll send my patches to you(eros2 at os2.ru).

Mar 26, 2007, 4:58:00 AM

My mail returned to me as saying the following.

Connected to xx.xx.xxx.xx but connection died. (#4.4.2)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.

Your mail server has a problem ? Or is there another way I can use ?

Mar 26, 2007, 11:22:00 AM

komh, mail server is ok, I receiving other mail without problem.

Please, try mail to eros2 at ecomstation.ru

Yes, another little bit for better life with OS/2. Thanks! However, there are some malfunctions: file transfer does not work for me (transfer dialog appears...and nothing), character encondings is not perfect...

2 John: SIM is quite buggy instant messenger :)

May 17, 2007, 1:30:00 AM

SIM seems to have played with my buddylist that is stored on the Oscar server. My buddies are not arranged as they should be, all my alerts are gone, and my profile gets wrecked. Is this just a side-effect of using SIM?

May 17, 2007, 8:31:00 AM

2 Brett: yes, SIM jumbles contacl list if you use more than one account. You may look to related bugs.

May 20, 2007, 6:21:00 AM

Well, thats a little bit annoying. It doesn't seem like they know why exactly it is happening? In any case, I was talking with Marty Mamodeo (Mr.Message/2) and he has given up Mr.Message and his GAIM port. Would you be interested in tackling Mr.Message/2 or helping me to try? I cant program, but I am willing to try and I want to contribute something..

May 21, 2007, 11:36:00 AM

2 Brett:

> Would you be interested in tackling Mr.Message/2

No, sorry.

On http://blog.e-espai.org I have published this entry in spanish. But I'm not able to make a ping from my blog to blogger

Jun 15, 2007, 1:51:00 AM

Thanks for the comment in my blog.

Now a question: Qt it's partially available, so Q DVD Author could be ported? it's a GUI for DVD Autor that's already ported by Paul Smedley.

Jun 15, 2007, 8:09:00 AM

2 Delfi_r: I think yes, as Q DVD Author uses Qt version 3.xx, which is fully functional under OS/2.

Jul 10, 2007, 11:23:00 AM

Here is a little bit of my log.txt:
SIM-IM: 10/07/2007 10:06:54 [DBG] Load plugin __hdir
SIM-IM: 10/07/2007 10:06:54 [ERR] Can't get pwd
So, what is wrong? File transfer does not work for me (tranfer bar appears, but transfer don´t starts), may be some relations?
Something similar (inability to save file to disc) happens to me with Valknut P2P client, which is compiled with Qt, I thing, too. Transfer dialog appears...and nothing. Some relations?

Jul 10, 2007, 12:15:00 PM

2 Anonymous: this err is normal, and not related to filetransfer.

May be you just firewalled? Anyway, filetransfer never works for me with any other ICQ client also, so I just not worrying about it.

Sure, Qt not related to filetransfer. For example, in Psi/2, which also uses Qt, filetransfer works for me when sender not firewalled.

So, you should look to your network setup. But again, filetransfer with ICQ never works for me with any ICQ client (under Windoze also).

This is a great job, thanks! The only thing I see that doesn't quite do what it should, with Yahoo, is that the icons (smilies) don't seem to translate over to the Yahoo side and vice versa. But I can live without those, it's great to be able to get back on IM and do it from eComStation!

Aug 14, 2008, 3:50:00 AM

Hey eros, I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a build of the Development version (0.9.5) with the July 2008 ICQ Hotfix. This version of SIM allows AIM users to send messages, something that has been broken for me and many others for a while under SIM.

Jan 27, 2009, 5:15:00 PM

SIM for OS2 used to work fine.. but now can not connect to hotmail any longer.. message is: SIM-IM: 27/01/2009 16:09:45 [DBG] Socket error Bad packet id (0)
Other IM clients (such as dMSN) run without problem..

Jan 29, 2009, 12:45:00 AM

MSN stopped working here too. People on the other side see me logging in and out repeatedly. Searching to see if others have a problem didn't find anything but I don't see how it would be OS/2 specific.
